Back To Earth With A Bump

I must admit it’s been a bit of a roller coaster of a week. It started with a very late night after the Euro 2020 Finals and not the result I was hoping for (“It’s coming Rome…!”).

And ended with a work deadline which focused the grey matter and meant more Excel time than PowerPoint, which made a nice change.

I look forward to my weekends for a number of reasons, but one of them is my regular weekend wander with my best mate from uni. We started walking early on a Saturday morning during the 1st lockdown to get our daily exercise in, but also stay sane and give ourselves an outlet to talk.

Men are not great at talking at the best of times, so this was a good way of providing a safe place to talk and see a familiar face. Just over 12 months later, we are still going. I really value the time we spend together and would encourage you all to find someone to speak with.

It helped me get to grips with the uncertainty of lockdown but also a way to talk about how I was feeling. Not always the easiest to do, but one I value hugely.

Do you have a trusted talking partner?

Lightbulb Moment

This week my lightbulb moment was to do with Microsoft Teams.

For the past 9 months, I’ve worried that back ground noise could be easily heard when on Teams meetings. This has led to constant muting / unmuting only to receive the almost guaranteed (at some point) “you’re on mute…

However, this week I learned from speaking to a friend at work, that Microsoft Teams has automatic noise cancelling set as default.

Wow.

This means all the drilling, kettle boiling, conversations happening in the background are never heard.

What a revelation.

If you are unsure about it, trying playing a song in the background when on a Teams call and ask someone if they can hear it. I’m betting the answer will be no.

If you want to check your settings, click on the 3 dots on your profile, go to settings and scroll down to device settings and look under noise suppression. It should be set to auto (where Microsoft determines the most appropriate level) or high (which suppresses all but your voice).

This for me was quite a #LightbulbMoment
